For the first release of the American Silver Eagle coin, the United States Mint turned to the San Francisco Mint to produce both the bullion and proof versions of the coin. The 1987 Silver Eagle is the 2nd coin of the series. This year saw a huge surge in mintage compared to the 1986 release. In fact, 1987 is by far the most common Silver Eagle of the 1980's with a mintage of over 11.4 million pieces, more than double that of any other year, and a number not eclipsed until 2008.
There were a total of 5.39 million bullion coins struck in 1986. As is common with modern proof coins, the 1.44 million proof 1986 American Silver Eagle coins was the highest in program history. There’s never been a higher production number for the proof version in the coin’s 30-year history.
