The Indian Head nickel was designed by James Earle Fraser and sometimes is called the buffalo or bison nickel. First struck in 1913, the Buffalo (or Indian) Nickel was a fitting tribute to the native American. On the obverse is the powerful bust of an Indian, with the Buffalo on the reverse.
